4,4',4''-[(Benzene-1,3,5-triyl)triethyne-2,1-diyl]tripyridine is a stepwise synthesized tetranuclear luminescent molecule. It has a diameter of 17.7 Å and an architecture that is systematically generated by synthetic methods. The molecule was found to be supramolecular with alkali metal cations in the cavity. This molecule has been shown to emit light when irradiated by laser or UV light. When the emission wavelength was analyzed using diffraction, two distinct molecules were observed: one isomeric form and one isomeric form. The isomerism arises from the chemical structure of the molecule's metal cations. These metal cations are able to bind other ions through electrostatic interactions in order to create a variety of structures. The affinity of these metal cations for different ions can be altered by changing their oxidation state.
