Zeylenone is a polymerase chain inhibitor that is used as an anticancer agent. Zeylenone inhibits the activity of DNA polymerases and prevents DNA replication. Zeylenone has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells, cervical cancer cells, and breast cancer cells in culture. Zeylenone also causes apoptosis in these cells by increasing the levels of pro-apoptotic proteins such as endonuclease G and caspase-9. This drug has also been shown to decrease cell proliferation, increase cell death, and decrease mitochondrial membrane potential in prostate cancer cells.
