It inhibits HIV from infecting human cells and is considered as a lead molecule for drug development. Tert-Butyl 4-(1-cyano-2-ethoxy-2-oxoethylidene)piperidine-1-carboxylate also has antiviral effects against other viruses, including human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV), hepatitis C virus, and herpes simplex virus.
