Macrocarpal K is a natural product that is extracted from the mussel Macrocarpal edulis. It has been shown to have anti-depressive effects in mice and modulates the behavioural response of these animals to chronic stress. Macrocarpal K also inhibits bacterial growth in vitro, with an IC50 of 0.4mg/mL for Galloprovincialis and 1mg/mL for Mytilus galloprovincialis. The extract also has a high adduct formation potential with DNA and can be used as a sensitive biomarker for the detection of microorganisms in water samples.
