It is a synthetic analog of indirubin, a natural compound found in Chinese herbal medicine. Selumetinib sulfate has been shown to induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in human cancer cells by inhibiting the activity of specific kinases involved in tumor growth. This drug has been used to treat various types of cancer, including lung and thyroid cancers, with promising results. Selumetinib sulfate also shows potential as a protein kinase inhibitor for the treatment of other diseases such as neurofibromatosis type 1. The drug is excreted mainly through urine after metabolism by esterases and CYP3A4 enzymes.
