It is used as a precursor in the synthesis of murrayaquinone, an antibiotic that has been shown to be effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The sequential process for this synthesis involves cross-coupling followed by reductive amination and electrophilic substitution. 4-Bromo-2-iodonitrobenzene is also used in the manufacture of ellipticinium, another antibiotic that is active against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This chemical can also be used in biomolecular chemistry and as a methodology for chemistry.
