It functions primarily to reduce cholesterol absorption in the intestine and dissolve cholesterol gallstones. This mechanism involves changing the composition of bile and reducing the cholesterol saturation in bile, which reduces micellar cholesterol and bile acid pool size, limiting stone formation.
