4-Chloro-2-phenylamino-benzoic acid (4CPBA) is a β-galactosidase inhibitor that has been shown to be an agonist of this enzyme in cell culture. 4CPBA is used as a test compound for β-galactosidase inhibition and has been shown to be effective against antibiotic resistant bacteria. It may also be beneficial in preventing bacterial infections by antagonizing the ability of bacteria to adhere to cells. The use of 4CPBA is limited by its toxicity, but it can be used in miniaturized systems because it does not inhibit the growth of E. coli or other nonpathogenic species such as E.
