Thulium(III) chloride hydrate is a chemical compound with the formula TmCl3·xH2O. It is a white solid that can be obtained by reacting thulium metal with hydrochloric acid and hydrogen chloride gas. It has a number of uses in electronics, such as in the production of photoelectron guns and electron microscopes. The compound's most notable property is its ability to fluoresce under ultraviolet light. Thulium(III) chloride hydrate is also used as an activator for nuclear fuels, such as uranium dioxide, thorium dioxide and plutonium dioxide. When mixed with these fuels, it helps to produce more neutrons and heat from fission.
