D-erythro-dihydrosphingosine-1-phosphate is an intermediate form of sphingolipids that can be used as a biomarker for liver cancer. D-erythro-dihydrosphingosine-1-phosphate is phosphorylated by the enzyme sphingosine kinase to the corresponding phosphorylcholine. This reaction is catalyzed by an ATP molecule and magnesium ion, which are both required for this reaction. The hydroxyl group on the phosphate moiety of D-erythro-dihydrosphingosine-1-phosphate can be used in analytical methods such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry to determine its concentration in a sample. A model system using rat liver microsomes has been shown that camp levels increase at low concentrations of D-erythro-dihydrosphingosine 1 phosphate. Basic fibroblasts, when
