1-(3,4-Dimethoxybenzyl)guanidine is a neurotrophic agent that acts by binding to the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor and by increasing the availability of neurotrophic factors. It also promotes axonal growth and inhibits the expression of choline acetyltransferase in neurons. The neurotrophic effects are more pronounced in animals treated with monoclonal antibodies against nerve growth factor (NGF) or nitro as compared to untreated control animals. Rats injected with 1-(3,4-dimethoxybenzyl)guanidine showed a significant increase in the number of neurons in their ganglia when compared to untreated controls.
