It belongs to the group of organomercurials, which are antifungal drugs. 2-Phenylpent-4-enoic acid has been shown to exhibit in vitro antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The pharmacological profiles of this compound have been determined by evaluating its effects on protein synthesis and cell growth. It is a reductive eliminator of carbonyls, which may be due to the presence of two double bonds in its structure; this property makes it useful as an antifungal drug.
