- Methanesulfonamide, N-(2-formylphenyl)-
The Wittig reaction is a type of chemical reaction that involves the conversion of an alkyl halide to an alkene using a phosphine and a compound containing a double bond. The reaction is usually conducted in the presence of an acid catalyst, such as sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid. The reaction proceeds by addition of the phosphine to the halide followed by nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon. This leads to formation of a new carbon-carbon bond and release of phosphorus as inorganic phosphate.
The kinetic experimentally determined that when 2-(methylsulfonamido)benzaldehyde was reacted with γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), it yielded 2-(methylsulfonamido)benzoic acid with an efficiency of 51%. The yield for this experiment was calculated by taking the weight percent change in reactants minus the weight percent change in products and then dividing that number by 100.
