FR 901379 binds to the sterols in the membrane and alters its permeability, leading to cell death. This drug has been shown to have a low toxicity profile and can be administered orally with no need for intravenous administration.FR 901379 is structurally related to micafungin, but it differs from micafungin in that it is not acid-labile and it does not bind to DNA.
