- (S)-5-Chloromethyl-2-Oxazolidinone
(S)-5-(Chloromethyl)oxazolidin-2-one is an intermediate that is used in the synthesis of linezolid, a drug that inhibits bacterial growth by preventing protein synthesis. It is also an efficient reagent for the synthesis of phosphazene and other intermediates. This chemical can be prepared by the reaction of methylamine with chloroacetone (phosphoryl chloride). The reaction product is treated with methanol to produce 5-(chloromethyl)oxazolidin-2-one. This compound can also be synthesized from alcohols, such as toluene, and isocyanates.
