It acts as a chlorinating agent and prevents the formation of chlorophyll, which is required for plant growth. 5CFHB has been shown to be effective against tobacco mosaic virus, and it can also inhibit bacterial marker genes in plants. The herbicide also has an effect on plants that are resistant to other control agents, such as salicylic acid, due to its hydroxyl group and chlorine atoms. 5CFHB has been shown to be effective in controlling plant diseases such as potato blight and anthracnose.
