Dimethyl 5-methoxyisophthalate is synthesized from salicylic acid in the presence of formaldehyde, yielding thermally stable macrocycles with functional groups on their surface. Dimethyl 5-methoxyisophthalate is soluble in organic solvents such as acetonitrile and dichloromethane.
