4-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)butanoic acid (4-OHB) is a metabolite of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. It is produced by the enzyme catecholamine-O-methyltransferase (COMT). 4-OHB has been detected in mammalian tissues, including the brain and peripheral organs. 4-OHB is a neurotransmitter that activates both cyclic AMP and phosphodiesterase pathways. It is possible that 4-OHB may act as a neuromodulator or neurotransmitter in some regions of the central nervous system. For example, it has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in glioma cells by altering gene expression via activation of the transcription factor CREB.
