3-(1,3-Oxazol-5-yl)pyridine is a novel allosteric modulator that has been shown to have potential as a treatment for psychiatric disorders. It has been found to selectively inhibit the binding of acetylcholine to its muscarinic receptors. 3-(1,3-Oxazol-5-yl)pyridine binds in an allosteric site on the receptor and increases the affinity of acetylcholine for the receptor by blocking the movement of agonists from the orthosteric site. This inhibition prevents the release of neurotransmitters, which are vital for memory formation and learning.
