N4-Ethyl-2'-deoxycytidine has been shown to be active against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), HSV-2, cytomegalovirus (CMV), human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and HIV-2 in vitro. This drug also has antiangiogenic properties due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of vascular endothelial growth factor A.
