Chrysoobtusin is a Chinese herb that is used as a dietary supplement. It contains hydroxyl groups, which are often found in drugs that function as inhibitors of inflammation. Chrysoobtusin has been shown to have inhibitory properties against inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and asthma. This compound also possesses strong antioxidant activity and may be helpful in the treatment of cancer. In vivo studies show that chrysoobtusin metabolites are excreted in urine, suggesting it is well-absorbed by the body after oral administration. Toxicity studies on Sprague-Dawley rats showed no significant toxicity at doses up to 2000 mg/kg for 14 days.
