Sonepiprazole hydrochloride is a potent serotonin receptor antagonist that blocks the effects of serotonin in the brain. It has been shown to be effective against depressive disorders and is used as an antidepressant. Sonepiprazole hydrochloride also has neurotrophic activity, which may be due to its ability to increase expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in vivo in human subjects. Sonepiprazole hydrochloride has shown no adverse effects on wastewater treatment, so it can be used with other drugs to improve their efficacy.
