Melanin probe-1 is a positron-emitting radiopharmaceutical that has been shown to have high uptake in melanomas and other cancers. It can be used as a diagnostic tool for cancer, as well as an effective dose for radiation therapy. Melanin probe-1 is believed to be an alternative to the more commonly used 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) for diagnosis of cancer metastasis. The use of this radioactive compound has not been approved for clinical use in humans, but it has been shown to be effective against primary tumors in mouse melanoma models.
