GW7604 is an antiestrogen that binds to estrogen receptors and blocks the effects of estrogen. GW7604 has a profile of pharmacokinetic properties, which includes oral administration and low plasma protein binding. GW7604 has been shown to block estrogen receptor activity in MCF-7 cells, and also inhibits the growth of these cells. Clinical studies have shown that GW7604 is effective in treating breast cancer in women. The drug is also potent as an antagonist against other estrogens, such as ethinyl estradiol and tamoxifen. The hydroxyl group on the molecule allows for attachment to a variety of pharmaceutical preparations, including pills, tablets, or capsules.
