Sulfathiazole-d4 is a sulfonamide antibiotic that has been used to treat bacterial infections. It has been shown to be effective in wastewater treatment and for the elimination of bacteria resistant to ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, and erythromycin. Sulfathiazole-d4 is used in combination with other antibiotics such as sulfamethoxazole or trimethoprim for the treatment of enterococci, which are resistant to penicillin and erythromycin. The d4 isotope is used for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging studies of antimicrobial resistance in effluent samples from wastewater treatment plants. This isotope emits gamma radiation that can penetrate the body and be detected by a PET scanner.
