4-Dodecylbenzoic acid is a synthetic compound that is used to produce aluminium nanoribbons. It is also used in the production of solvents, such as dioxane, and in the synthesis of lamellar materials. 4-Dodecylbenzoic acid has a layered morphology with an aluminium particle size of about 30 nm. The structure of this compound is composed of a linker and four dodecyl chains. In order for the product to be stable, it must be prepared in the presence of water or organic solvents. 4-Dodecylbenzoic acid can be synthesized by mixing two different synthetic mixtures together in aqueous solution at elevated temperatures. This process produces an organic layer on top and an inorganic layer on bottom. 4-Dodecylbenzoic acid has been shown to have kinetic properties as well as being able to form structured frameworks with other compounds like magnesium oxide or silicon
