Rifamycin PR-3 is an antiparasitic and antibacterial agent that belongs to the rifamycin family. It is a natural product obtained from fermentation of Streptomyces mediterranei. Rifamycin PR-3 has been used as an anti-tuberculosis drug for decades and is also used in the treatment of other bacterial infections, such as leprosy. This antibiotic has shown activity against viruses, fungi and parasites. Rifamycin PR-3 inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and prevents the formation of peptide bonds between amino acids, which are necessary for the production of proteins.
