3-Nitrocinnoline is an organic compound with the molecular formula C6H5NO. Its chemical name is 3-amino-1,2,4-triazol-5-ylcinnolin. The hydrogen atom in the molecule can be replaced by an alkyl group to form a cinnoline derivative. Nitrocinnoline can be synthesized by amination of aniline followed by oxidation of the amino group, or by reaction between nitroethane and cinnamic acid. The synthesis of 3-nitrocinnoline via the amination route involves two steps: first, amination of aniline with formaldehyde and ammonium chloride; then, reduction of the resulting imine to nitrocinoline with sodium borohydride or lithium aluminum hydride.
