Hydroxy-PEG1-(CH2)2-Boc is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be an active antiretroviral drug. It is a covalent inhibitor of HIV reverse transcriptase. This agent binds to the enzyme and blocks its activity, preventing the formation of viral DNA. Hydroxy-PEG1-(CH2)2-Boc has been shown to inhibit the replication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in vitro and in vivo. The hydroxy-PEG1-(CH2)2-Boc molecule is synthesized by irradiation of the boc group. Hydroxy-PEG1-(CH2)2-Boc binds to the host cell receptor, which prevents entry into the cell by blocking gp120 attachment to CD4 receptors on the host cell surface.
