It has been shown to react with methanol, yielding benzaldehyde and acetamide. The carbonyl group can then be converted to ketones or substituted with an amine group. N-Benzyl-N-methylacetoacetamide reacts with triplet molecular oxygen to form a benzene radical, which can undergo photocyclization reactions in the presence of light or other energy sources. Irradiation of this molecule yields a highly reactive singlet oxygen molecule that can react with double bonds.
