3-o-Trans-p-coumaroyltormentic acid is a natural product that has shown inhibitory effects on the growth of cancer cells. It also inhibits tumor formation in mice transplanted with human breast cancer cells. 3-o-Trans-p-coumaroyltormentic acid has been found to be cytotoxic and to inhibit the growth of cultured colon cancer cells by inducing apoptosis. This compound is effective against inflammatory bowel disease, and may also have therapeutic potential for bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis. 3-o-Trans-p-coumaroyltormentic acid is a metabolite of pomolic acid, which belongs to the class of phenylpropanoic acids. The metabolic pathway for this compound includes oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes and conjugation with glucuronic acid.
