Remelteon is a drug that is used to treat insomnia. It is an orally-administered, long-acting, nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic agent that has shown efficacy in treating insomnia. Remelteon contains two stereoisomers, which are chemically distinct from one another. The pharmacological effects of remelteon are mediated by the binding to melatonin receptor MT1 and MT2 in the brain. It has been shown that remelteon binds to these receptors with greater affinity than melatonin, and therefore may be more potent than melatonin as a therapeutic agent for insomnia. In addition, remelteon has been shown to possess neurodevelopmental properties due to its effect on serotonin and dopamine neurotransmitter systems. Remelteon is available as a granule formulation or phosphate salt formulation, both of which are taken orally.
