It is also used in the production of pesticides, dyes, and other organic chemicals. BDE No 205 has been found to be a potential human carcinogen. The chemical undergoes debromination in the environment and can be taken up by living organisms through inhalation or ingestion of contaminated food or water. BDE-205 binds to human serum albumin and accumulates in the liver cells, where it causes DNA damage and cell death. The median concentration of BDE-205 was found to be 3 ng/g dry weight in liver cells from humans who died with no known cause of death.
