7-Amino-4-(methoxymethyl)coumarin is a fluorescent compound that is used as a marker for the mannosyltransferase activity of glycosyltransferases. The enzyme uses an amino acid and a sugar to form a glycan. This process can be observed in yeast cells by labeling the enzyme with 7-amino-4-(methoxymethyl)coumarin.
Mannosyltransferases are involved in the synthesis of cell surface proteins and extracellular matrix proteins, and are also important for signal transduction, endoplasmic reticulum function, and membrane protein biosynthesis.
