Phenyl N-benzylcarbamate is a neurotoxic agent that has been shown to inhibit the activity of paraoxonase, an enzyme that metabolizes organophosphates. Phenyl N-benzylcarbamate can be used as a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases and Alzheimer's disease. It has also been used in the study of opioid receptors and the development of other drugs. The inhibitory effect of phenyl N-benzylcarbamate on tissue expression was first shown using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and human erythrocytes. This inhibition was found to be reversible by washing with water and the addition of fatty acids.
