4-Amino-5-bromopyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine is a natural compound that belongs to the class of pyrrolopyrimidines. It has been isolated from the sponge Hypnea and has shown affinity for histamine H3 receptors. 4-Amino-5-bromopyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine is also a nucleoside analog and has been shown to inhibit the growth of echinodictyum at concentrations of 20 μM. The chlorinated derivative of 4-Amino-5-bromopyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine was synthesized in an attempt to increase its potency as a receptor ligand. The chlorinated derivative was found to be selective for histamine H3 receptors over histamine H1 receptors, but had no significant effect on dehalogenation or hypnea growth inhibition.
