The hydrogen atom at the 2-position of cinnamaldehydes can be replaced by an alkyl group in a stereoselective manner. A study of the relative rates of hydrogenation of cis and trans cinnamaldehydes with catalytic amounts of Raney Nickel showed that the rate of reaction was preferentially higher for the isomer with a hydrogen atom at the 2-position. The use of deuterium as a hydrogen source for the hydrogenation reaction also showed that this isomer was selectively hydrogenated.
