- Acetamide, 2-phenylthio-
2-(Phenylthio)acetamide is a chemical compound that is an inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase. It forms a covalent bond with the enzyme and prevents it from catalyzing the conversion of CO2 to HCO3- and H+ ions. 2-(Phenylthio)acetamide also inhibits β-lactamase, which is an enzyme that breaks down penicillin and other β-lactam antibiotics. The drug has been found to be effective in treating glaucoma by reducing the production of aqueous humor, which causes increased intraocular pressure. 2-(Phenylthio)acetamide has also been found to have anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo.
