The monolayer of 2-(hydroxymethyl)anthracene molecules can be used as a molecular template for the synthesis of other supramolecular structures, such as cavities and functional groups. This molecule has been shown to be fluorescent when irradiated with UV light. 2-(Hydroxymethyl)anthracene has hydrophobic interactions with other molecules, which may cause it to aggregate in water.
