3,8-Dimethoxyxanthone is an Indian medicinal plant that belongs to the genus Loganiaceae. It has been used as a medicine in India and China for many centuries. Extracts of 3,8-dimethoxyxanthone have been found to be effective against platelet aggregation and bacterial growth. The extract is also hepatoprotective and has anti-diabetic properties. 3,8-Dimethoxyxanthone can be used as a dye in perfumery or as a green pigment in paints and lacquers because it is dioxygenated. This compound is used in pharmacopoeias as a secoiridoid (a type of phenylpropanoid) that contains two acetate groups.
