Bonannione A is a natural product that has been isolated from the roots of the plant Piper bonanza. It has been shown to inhibit autophagy, which may be due to its ability to bind to dextran sulfate and geranylgeranyl groups, preventing their attachment to proteins. This binding leads to increased phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which induces glucose uptake and glycolysis in cancer cells. Bonannione A also has significant anti-inflammatory properties, as it inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6. This compound also displays apoptotic activity by inducing caspase-3 activation in cancer cells.
