Nebracetam hemifumarate is a precursor of acetylcholine that has been shown to have therapeutic effects on cerebellar granule cells, energy metabolism, and striatal dopamine. It has been shown that nebracetam hemifumarate binds to the cholinergic receptors in the brain, increasing the uptake of dopamine. This drug has also been shown to be effective for bowel disease, with symptoms including diarrhea and abdominal pain. Nebracetam hemifumarate is an analog of piracetam and its efficacy is dependent on dose. The effective dose for nebracetam hemifumarate is not yet known but it may be less than the effective dose of piracetam. Nebracetam hemifumarate has not been studied in humans; however, it has been observed in rats that this drug can inhibit inflammatory bowel disease by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α.
