- Thaxtomine A
Thaxtomin A is a polyene macrolide antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial DNA. It binds to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) enzyme, which is necessary for DNA replication. Thaxtomin A has been shown to inhibit the production of cytosolic calcium ions and affect the metabolic rate of bacteria by binding to fatty acids in their cytoplasmic membrane. This drug has also been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory properties, inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in mammalian cells. The structure of Thaxtomin A was determined using x-ray crystallography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
