3-Geranyloxyemodin is a naturally occurring compound that has been identified in the ovary cells of various plants and animal species. 3-Geranyloxyemodin inhibits the growth of cancer cells by interfering with the cell cycle at G2/M phase. It has shown anti-cancer activity against human ovarian, breast, cervical and colon cancer cell lines. The in vitro test has shown that 3-geranyloxyemodin is toxic to human cells, but not to mouse cells. The extraction process from plant sources can be done using n-hexane or ethanol solvents and dry weight measurements can be used for quantification. Toxicity studies have been conducted on mice and rats, showing no adverse effects at high doses.
