1-Hydroxyxanthone is a hydrogen bond-forming antioxidant compound that has been found to be efficacious against cancer. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of tumors and may have potential as a treatment for breast cancer. 1-Hydroxyxanthone is soluble in organic solvents, and forms hydroxyl groups in the presence of an alkanoic acid. The hydroxy group on 1-hydroxyxanthone can form hydrogen bonds with other molecules, which leads to its potent inhibitory activity. 1-Hydroxyxanthone is also able to inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the dinucleotide phosphate (DNP) site at the ribosome. This leads to reduced levels of camp and other metabolites associated with inflammation, which are linked to cancer progression.
