TRAM-39 is a drug that affects the endothelial function in the carotid arteries. It has been shown to increase intracellular calcium concentration, which activates potassium ions and hyperpolarizes vascular smooth muscle cells. This drug also inhibits activation of the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which means that it does not promote the production of inflammatory prostaglandins. TRAM-39 has been shown to have no effect on acetylcholine release from skeletal muscle cells, but does inhibit acetylcholine release from smooth muscle cells in the prostate and uterus. TRAM-39 may be used for treatment of women with high blood pressure or for those who are unable to take other blood pressure medications due to side effects.
