Lucidenic acid P (LAP) is a natural product derived from the mushroom Ganoderma lucidum. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting cellular proliferation, angiogenesis, and metastasis. LAP is also an anti-inflammatory agent that reduces the production of inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). LAP has been shown to have antiviral activity against HIV, hepatitis B virus, and herpes simplex virus type 1. It also inhibits telomerase activity in human cancer cells as well as β-catenin expression.
LAP is a fatty acid with two notched structures in its chemical backbone; these notches are believed to be responsible for its biological activities. The structure of LAP consists of an alpha-methylene fatty acid chain with two notched rings on the side chains.
