The molecule adopts a lamellar structure that contains hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups and the boronate esters. (2-Chloro-3-cyanophenyl)boronic acid exhibits a reversible phase transition temperature of about 200°C, which can be used as an analytical tool to measure changes in volume. Crystallographic studies show that this compound exhibits incommensurate sequences when reacting with nitrate ion or trinitrate ion.
