Ostruthin is a coumarin derivative that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibiting protein synthesis, leading to cell death. Ostruthin has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation in muscle cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit chemical structures such as protocatechuic acid and imperatorin. Ostruthin also has antimicrobial activity against a number of bacterial strains. It binds to the benzodiazepine binding site on bacterial enzymes and inhibits cell division. Ostruthin also has anti-inflammatory properties due to its inhibition of prostaglandins.
