Prosaikogenin D is a saponin found in the Chinese medicine formula, Qianjin Yitong Tang. It has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against cancer cells and has anti-cancer properties. Prosaikogenin D has been shown to inhibit prostate cancer cells in vitro by decreasing the expression of prostate-specific antigen and inhibiting cell proliferation. This compound also inhibits the growth of rat mesangial cells by reducing the expression of bcl-2 and increasing apoptosis. The hydroxyl group on the C-6 position may be responsible for its anti-cancer effects.
